Moving the Sheep 11/23/2003
Today we do the sorting with dogs. (Sometimes kids are here to learn about sheep, and they help, too.) It is very important that the dogs are very athletic, extremely fast, and can quickly jump from one part of the corral to the other. Border Collies are unable to run our hair sheep flock—they are too slow and the rams mash them up. A few herders tried it and gave it up shortly after. Instead, we use heading dogs, which are extremely fast and know how to handle cattle and stubborn
sheep. The dog jumps from one compartment to the other, and when we open the gate,
the sheep flow easily to the selection process.
